About us

Welcome to the Society for
Mathematics and Computation in Music

The Society was founded in 2006 as an International Forum for researchers and musicians working in the trans-disciplinary field at the intersection of music, mathematics and computation. The SMCM is registered in the USA.

At its inaugural meeting in Berlin on May 20, 2007, 13 board members were elected. The board later elected the officers for the society. For details, please see the March 2008 newsletter here.

Call for hosting MCM 2026

MCM 2026 will be held outside of Europe, for example, in the Americas. The Executive Board is now accepting proposals for hosts, and will decide by May 1, 2024. The host for MCM 2026 should send at least one delegate to MCM 2024 (University of Coimbra, Portugal) to make a short (5-10 minute) Power Point presentation to the members of the SMCM at the general meeting, held biennially at the conferences.

The SMCM will collaborate with the host institution and/or individuals in the conference planning process, in order to serve as a resource, and to guarantee the continuity and growth of the MCM conference series.

Points to include in the proposal:
  1. The scientific program
    1. The MCM Publications Committee will work with a local Scientific Program Committee, that should be determined although modifications can be made. The proceedings are published by Springer in their series Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence, and the MCM conference now has eight volumes of 10-12 page articles, from which the talks are given.
  2. Local organization
    1. A venue (or venues) to carry out the sessions, plenary talks, and concerts.
    2. Options of hotels or other housing (and transportation if necessary) that will allow easy access to the venues.
  3. General organizational aspects
    1. Develop a website that will contribute all necessary information in a timely way.
    2. Establish the necessary contacts with the institutions that will sponsor the event.
    3. Carry out the communication between the people and institutions involved so that all member of SMCM know exactly what to expect.
